I spoke to an adult adoptee today who was adopted in the early 1960′s from a closed adoption …he shared his journey of searching for his birth mother when he was in his mid 30′s and he and his wife were starting a family…they very much wanted medical history prior to starting to have children…he stated he was successful in finding his birthmother and obtained the much needed medical history and gained an ongoing meaningful relationship with her and his birth family …So many adoptees are unable to locate their birth mothers/birth families and are taking to Facebook in search of finding them…. They are hoping to make those connections that have been denied them by a system that for so long cloaked adoption in a shroud of secrecy, shame, and misinformation and sadly has caused large numbers of adoptees additional losses that they have had to deal with…I came upon this news story of an adoptee who is using Facebook to try to locate her birth mother… in doing so she found on-line a supportive community of adoptees, adoptive families and birth families all dealing with various issues and feelings related to search and reunion…the adoptee is watching closely recent legislation introduced in the state of New York (the adoptees birth place) that would allow adoptees access to their original birth certificates.. .till then Facebook is filling the void…click below to read and see the news clip of this adoptee’s story…
